Mercury Filmworks, an independent animation studio based in Ottawa, Ontario, creates animations and TV shows for global platforms, including Netflix, Disney, and Apple, featuring iconic characters like Mickey Mouse and Simba the lion.
I designed a website that showcased Mercury's animations while also serving as a recruitment tool. I aimed to infuse moments of joy into the website experience without overwhelming it with excessive animations. The goal was to strike a balance between their premium branding and colourful illustrations. Animated elements were used sparingly, and transitions were meticulously coded to bring life to even the simplest elements. Animated curved media containers added an organic touch to every site component, and strategic animation loops highlighted their character work.
The scribble M icon played a pivotal role in Mercury's branding, serving as an interactive masked video element connected to their tagline, "It all starts with a scribble." Users can hover over the M icon to reveal the main brand showcase video, adding interactivity to the website.
